Horia Damian was born on February 27, 1922 in Bucharest and died on May 13, 2012 in Paris. He carries out a rich activity of painting and sculpture throughout his life, based on architectural studies made in Bucharest. He exhibited for the first time at the Official Salon in 1942 (where he won the Prize for engraving); 1942 is also the year of his first personal exhibition. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1942. Later, as a participant in the Official Salon in 1945, he won the Anastase Simu Prize, which also consisted of a scholarship, which allowed him to reach Paris, where he had the privilege of studying under coordination of André Lhote and Fernand Léger. 1952 is the year of his first exhibition abroad (after leaving the country), an exhibition that will be followed by other major events. His structure as an architect is easily decipherable in his works on canvas, through the extraordinary rigor of the drawing. The canvases organized on iconographic cycles often deal with archetypal architectural elements, such as gates, temples, pyramids, constructions, capitals, pediments, etc. He has had numerous painting and sculpture exhibitions in North America and Europe and has participated in the Venice and São Paolo Biennials. Horia Damian's artistic activity includes various modes of manifestation: painting on canvas, installations, stained glass, etc.
