Ion Valentin Anestin (1900 - 1963) graphic artist, graphic artist, painter, sculptor, journalist and playwright
Ion Valentin Anestin (b. December 24, 1900 in Craiova - d. December 6, 1963 in Bucharest) was a Romanian graphic artist, graphic artist, painter, sculptor, journalist and playwright. He also stood out for his caricatures and for his work as an art critic. Ion Valentin Anestin attended, between 1918-1920, the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest, where he had the sculptor Frederik Storck as his teacher. He then continued his studies at the Free Academy of Art, founded by the painter Arthur Verona. After 1921, he became a theater and art chronicler, writing prose, drama and journalism (in the publications Epoca, Vremea, Bluze albastre, Cuvântul liber, Adevărul literar şi artistic, Timpul, Gluma), but he also dealt with graphics, especially caricature and humorous drawing. At the initiative of Vladimir Donescu, his former high school classmate, he collaborated between 1931 and 1943 on the weekly Vremea, owning the theatrical page and the graphic presentation. During the interwar period, Anestin published albums with engravings and illustrations, creating his own style, imitated by other graphic artists. Between May 1940 and September 1944, in the magazine Gluma Anestin, he published anti-Stalinist caricatures with the legend Butcher in the Red Square. Because of them, in 1944 Anestin was suspended for five years from journalistic activity and then arrested. Romanian political figures such as Nicolae Titulescu, Iuliu Maniu, Ion Mihalache, Ion Inculeț, Alexandru Averescu, Octavian Goga, Gheorghe Tătărăscu or foreigners, such as Adolf Hitler or Benito Mussolini, appeared in his caricatures.
