Art Deco box (approx. 1925), made of wood, with silver inlays.

Art Deco is an abbreviation for the French expression called the International Exhibition of Decorative and Modern Industrial Arts, which took place in Paris in 1925 (Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes). It designates an artistic movement of the early 20th century in the decorative arts, which later increased in breadth and importance, subsequently significantly influencing architecture, sculpture, fashion, interior decoration and visual arts for a quarter of a century. Its origins lie in the decline of the Art Nouveau or La Belle Epoque artistic movement. Art Deco covers the period 1912 - 1940, with various subsequent attempts at revitalization in the post-war years 1950 and 1960, largely unsuccessful.
