Superb Murano-style vases. The perfect new home gift.

Murano glass is a famous product from the island of Murano, on the coast of Venice. Murano's reputation for glass production was born when the Venetian Republic, fearing fires and calamities, ordered glassmakers to move their workshops to the island of Murano (1291). When an ordinary man succeeded in becoming a glassmaker, he was ennobled and inscribed in the Golden Book of the island. They soon became the most respected citizens of the island, they had the right to marry their children to the children of the nobles, even enjoying immunity, but above all, they were not allowed to leave Venice.
The process by which Murano glass is obtained is quite complex. Using fine quartz sand combined with various salts brought from the Phoenician cities of Sidon (Lebanon), these craftsmen managed to obtain products that had no rival in the world. Murano glass was made according to secret recipes, to which was added a unique mastery of glass processing obtained and therefore became a very well kept secret. Technically, it is done like this: the other raw materials, called fondants or melting agents, lower the melting point of the glass. The more sodium oxide the glass contains, the harder it is to solidify. This is very important for manual work because it saves the glassmaker more time for modeling. A craftsman can add sodium (to make the surface of the glass opaque, nitrate or arsenic (to remove bubbles) or colorants.
