Mihai (Mişu) Teişanu was born in Brăila on November 29. 1883 (according to other sources in 1884) and studied painting at the Julian Academy in Paris, then a more liberal alternative to the École de Beaux-Arts. Julian accepted women to paint male nudes, for example, or even amateurs, but at the top of amateurism. Artists such as Alfons Mucha, Derain, Dubuffet, Matisse, and among the Romanians Ion Andreescu and Camil Ressu passed through this private academy. Mişu Teişanu died in 1944, after a family drama left its unsettling mark on both his life and his style. Misu Teisanu a fost exact artistul ce-a voit sa fie. Foarte multumit cu ce-i iesea de sub penel, n-a suferit niciodata fiindca n-a indraznit sa doreasca mai mult. Un negustor de arta mi-a explicat ce-i aceea stationare negativa. Cand toti vor mai mult si tu ramai egal in castig, stationarea e, de fapt, cadere. Ca majoritatea confratilor care au studiat la Paris, Misu Teisanu nu a dorit sa ajunga un pictor la fel de vestit ca marii artisti ai Frantei, ci sa se intoarca in tara si sa conteze intre primii la Bucuresti. Teisanu nu-i un uitat. In comparatie cu atatia contemporani carora nu reusim sa le reconstituim biografia, nici sa le vedem tablourile, el e un pictor cu lucrari circulate. Prestigiul, de care se bucura mapa cu ilustratii la „Luceafarul”, se rasfrange nemeritat asupra intregului stoc de pasteluri inchipuind dormitoare cu cuconite rasfatate de viata. Cine cumpara insa uleiuri semnate de Teisanu din anii 1910-1920 descopera un artist adevarat, un perfectionist pe suprafete mici, cu amintirea inca vie a unor maestri europeni de cea mai aleasa conditie.
